Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game PHYSINT has a new home, with Xbox Game Studios stepping in to publish the project following Sony Interactive Entertainment’s decision to end its collaboration with Kojima Productions.
In a significant change for one of Hideo Kojima’s most anticipated future projects, Xbox and Kojima Productions have announced an expanded partnership that will see Microsoft publish PHYSINT.
Sony Interactive Entertainment had originally been collaborating with Kojima Productions on the project, but confirmed that it has now made the “difficult decision” to step away.
Despite ending its involvement with PHYSINT, Sony stressed that its long-standing relationship with Kojima remains strong and said it continues to have considerable admiration for his vision.
Xbox and Kojima Productions expand their partnership
PHYSINT will not be Kojima Productions’ first project with Xbox.
The two companies are already working together on OD, Kojima’s mysterious horror project. Bringing PHYSINT into the partnership significantly expands that relationship.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said Xbox was honoured that Kojima had selected the company to work alongside Kojima Productions on PHYSINT, highlighting Kojima’s reputation for challenging conventional game design.
Kojima himself confirmed that development is moving forward, describing PHYSINT as an attempt to redefine the action-espionage genre for players around the world.
More than just video games
There is another interesting element to the announcement.
Xbox and Kojima Productions say their expanded relationship will extend beyond OD and PHYSINT, with the companies also planning to collaborate across film and television to bring new stories to wider audiences.
That could make this a considerably broader partnership between Xbox and Kojima Productions than originally anticipated.
What exactly is PHYSINT?
PHYSINT was originally announced in 2024 as a new action-espionage game from Kojima Productions.
Naturally, that description has generated considerable interest among Metal Gear fans, given Kojima’s history with the stealth and espionage genre.
However, there’s still a lot we don’t know.
No release date has been announced, and importantly Xbox has not yet confirmed the platforms PHYSINT will launch on.
That means it would currently be premature to call PHYSINT an Xbox exclusive.
What is confirmed is that the project is continuing, Xbox Game Studios is its new publishing partner, and the relationship between Xbox and Kojima Productions has just become considerably bigger.
What WildStarGaming Thinks
Sony walking away from a Hideo Kojima project would have been major news by itself. Xbox stepping straight in to ensure PHYSINT continues makes this one of the more unexpected industry developments of the year.
With OD, PHYSINT and now potential film and television collaborations, Xbox appears to be building a substantial long-term relationship with Kojima Productions.
The big question now is simple:
What does Xbox have planned for PHYSINT, and where will we eventually be able to play it?
