YOU vs Zombies

YOU vs Zombies is an upcoming action roguelite that brings a rather interesting twist to the familiar zombie-survival formula. After spending a couple hours with the Steam Playtest, I found an enjoyable game with some creative ideas.

Creating Your Own Character

One of the most interesting features is the character creation system.

Rather than simply choosing from a selection of pre-made characters, the game allows you to answer questions and type in your own ideas to generate a personalised character.

I really enjoyed experimenting with this feature, including creating and playing with characters such as their version of the Marshmallow Man. It’s a fun addition that gives the game something different and encourages you to see what unusual characters you can come up with.

For me, this was easily one of the highlights of the game.

Familiar but Enjoyable Gameplay

When it comes to the actual gameplay, YOU vs Zombies offers some enjoyable moments, although much of the action feels fairly familiar.

There is fun to be had fighting through the zombie-filled environments. But during my time playing, I didn’t encounter anything that particularly changed my expectations of this type of game.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes a straightforward game can still be entertaining, and YOU vs Zombies certainly has moments where it delivers that.

Colourful Artwork

Another part of the game I enjoyed was the artwork.

This colourful style works well with the game’s unusual characters and light-hearted approach to zombie survival. It helps give the experience its own personality, particularly when experimenting with the character creator.

Early Impressions

After a couple of hours with YOU vs Zombies, my feelings are fairly positive, although I wouldn’t say the game has completely won me over just yet.

The character creation is easily its most interesting feature, and I enjoyed seeing what characters I could come up with. The artwork is good, and the gameplay offers some entertaining moments.

However, outside its creative character system, the overall experience feels standard.

There is certainly potential here, and I’m interested to see how the game develops beyond its current Playtest.
