I went into Serpent’s Gaze expecting another Souls-inspired roguelike, but it ended up being one of those games that quietly eats away at your evening because every run feels like it has the potential to be the run.
The combat is where the game really shines. It has enough weight to make every hit feel satisfying, while still rewarding good timing, positioning, and patience. Button mashing will get you killed, but once you start learning enemy patterns and making smarter decisions, the gameplay becomes incredibly rewarding. Boss fights are a particular highlight—they’re challenging without feeling cheap, and every victory genuinely feels earned.
I’ve spent most of my time playing in co-op, and this is where the game becomes something special. Working together to survive difficult encounters, rescuing a teammate at the last second, or watching your perfectly planned strategy collapse into complete chaos makes for some fantastic moments. The game creates the kind of stories you end up talking about after you’ve logged off, and that’s something a lot of co-op games struggle to do.
The progression system also deserves praise. Every run gives you opportunities to create a different build through blessings, relics, and upgrades, so it rarely feels like you’re playing the exact same character twice. Sometimes you’ll discover combinations that make you feel unstoppable, while other runs force you to adapt with whatever the game throws at you. That unpredictability keeps each expedition fresh.
Visually, the world has its own identity. The desert setting is atmospheric, the environments are well designed, and the enemies have a distinctive style that sets the game apart from the endless stream of dark medieval fantasy titles. The soundtrack and sound design do a great job of building tension without becoming overwhelming.
Of course, it is still Early Access, and it shows in places. I’d like to see more enemy variety, additional biomes, more weapon options, and some extra polish to the UI and tutorials. There are moments where mechanics could be explained a little better for new players. None of these issues have stopped me from enjoying the game, though—they just make me excited to see what future updates bring.
Most importantly, the developers seem to have built a genuinely solid foundation. The core gameplay loop is addictive, the combat feels great, and every update has the potential to turn an already enjoyable game into something truly outstanding.
If you’re a fan of challenging action games, roguelikes, or co-op experiences that reward teamwork and communication, Serpent’s Gaze is absolutely worth your time. It’s already a fantastic experience with friends, and if the developers continue building on what they’ve started here, I can easily see this becoming one of the standout games in the genre.
Looking forward to seeing where this journey goes.
