Razer has revived the Mako name with a new pair of compact desktop gaming speaker systems, the Razer Mako and Razer Mako X, bringing the long-dormant line back with modern connectivity, virtual surround sound and Chroma RGB lighting.

The new line is split into two versions. The standard Mako is the more substantial 2.1-channel setup, pairing two compact speakers with a dedicated forward-firing 3.5-inch subwoofer. The Mako X takes the smaller route, using a 2.0-channel design with built-in passive radiators instead of a separate subwoofer.
Two versions, one compact idea
Both models use custom-tuned 2.75-inch full-range drivers and are designed to angle sound towards the listener at a desk. Razer is also bringing virtual 7.1 surround sound to the range, positioning the speakers for gaming, movies and music rather than simply acting as basic desktop audio.
The Mako X is the more compact of the two and is rated for up to 30W RMS and 45W peak output. Its low-end response comes from integrated passive radiators, while the standard Mako adds the dedicated subwoofer for users who want a fuller 2.1 setup.
Chroma RGB is part of the design
As you would expect from modern Razer hardware, lighting is built into both models. The Mako uses rear-projection Chroma RGB designed to throw colour onto the wall behind the setup, while the Mako X uses 10-zone RGB underglow beneath the speakers.
Razer says the lighting can work with more than 300 Chroma-integrated games and apps, giving the range a natural place inside an existing Razer desk setup without forcing the speakers themselves to become visually enormous.
USB-C, Bluetooth and 3.5mm connectivity
Connectivity is deliberately broad. Both models support USB-C audio, Bluetooth 5.3 and a 3.5mm connection. On the Mako X, a single USB-C connection can provide audio and standard power, while a compatible higher-output USB-C power source can unlock the speaker system’s higher output level.
That flexibility is one of the more interesting parts of the announcement. Desktop gaming audio can quickly become a tangle of power bricks, USB leads and extra boxes, so a compact speaker system that can keep the cabling relatively simple has obvious appeal.
When is the Razer Mako X available?
Razer’s UK product page lists the Mako X for release on 6 October 2026. The wider Mako line is expected to continue rolling out through Q4 2026 and into 2027, with the full Mako 2.1 system following later.
WildStar’s take
This is hardware news rather than a hands-on review, so we are not making any claims yet about sound quality, bass performance or how convincing the virtual surround actually is in games.
What does stand out is the positioning. Razer is clearly targeting gamers who want something more substantial than basic desktop speakers without sacrificing half the desk to a traditional speaker setup. The Mako X in particular looks like the model to watch for smaller battlestations, while the standard Mako should appeal to players who still want a dedicated subwoofer.
We would be interested to see how both systems hold up in a real gaming setup, especially once volume, bass response, virtual surround and day-to-day connectivity are put under proper use.
