Dung Ho! – Chaotic Co-op fun, but a little one note.

Dung Ho is the one of the latest in a line of absurd titles designed to create a chaotic co-op experience that will have best laid plans quickly collapsing into hysterical laughter, and whilst it succeeds in this task in the early stages, there is little to keep players returning consistently.

Dung Ho has you playing as an insect, a dung beetle to be precise, and tasks you with rolling a ball of…well…dung, through a sprawling map with plenty of obstacles to hinder your progress and chip away at the size of the aforementioned dung ball, as well as some items and power ups for you to pick up that can be just as much of a curse as a blessing.

Let’s face it, nobody is going to go into a game like Dung Ho expecting a deep narrative and complex game mechanics. Dung Ho is a game designed for one purpose and one purpose only…fun.

Whilst Dung Ho does include a single player option, that is really not the focus of this game, Dung Ho is designed for you to play with as many people as you can, adding to the chaos and therefore adding to the fun, and whilst this is certainly true for the earlier stages of the game, Dung Ho does not really expand on this idea and ends up feeling a little repetitive and at times can also be frustrating as the difficulty increases and more obstacles and enemies are added, and even the more recent pirate themed update does little to alleviate this.

That’s not to say there is no fun to be had here, as a game played in shorter sessions with multiple people, Dung Ho is a riot, when conflicting ideas of paths to take cause absolute chaos and leads to your dung ball being sent flying half way across the map only to land in a pond, the game will quickly devolve into fits of giggles and playful finger pointing as people try to figure out what went wrong. This is a game that manages to be both absurd and challenging and I’m sure that many people will spend many hours trying to reach the finish line of levels with a dung ball at least somewhat still intact.

At the end of the day, Dung Ho is a game where what you see is what you get. So if you are looking for a game to play with a bunch of friends that will no doubt cause many laughs, then you could do a lot worse than to give Dung Ho a go.
