A new rumour suggests Microsoft could be considering selling its next Xbox console without a controller included in the box as a way to reduce costs.
To be clear, this has not been officially confirmed by Xbox, so it should be treated as speculation for now. However, the idea does not come completely out of nowhere. Xbox has already confirmed that it is working on its next generation console, currently known as Project Helix, and the company has also been talking about rising hardware costs and the need to think differently about future Xbox devices.
The logic behind the rumour is simple. If Microsoft wants to keep the next Xbox price lower, removing the controller from the standard package could be one way to cut the upfront cost. Many existing Xbox players already own at least one compatible Xbox controller, especially because recent Xbox controllers work across Xbox consoles, PC, mobile, and cloud gaming.
That could make a controller-free model possible, at least as an optional cheaper bundle.
But there is a big problem: it would also be risky.
A games console launching without a controller would be controversial. For new players, families, casual buyers, and anyone switching from PlayStation or Nintendo, it would feel incomplete. A console is expected to work out of the box. If someone buys a new Xbox and then has to spend extra money on a controller, that “cheaper” price suddenly looks less honest.
There is also a messaging issue. Xbox is already fighting the perception that its next console could be expensive, especially with rumours that Project Helix may be more like a premium hybrid Xbox and PC device. If Microsoft removes the controller to reduce the advertised price, some players may see it as cost-cutting rather than innovation.
The better approach would be to offer two versions: a cheaper console only package for existing Xbox players, and a normal bundle with a controller included for everyone else. That would give Microsoft flexibility without annoying new buyers.
For now, this remains only a rumour. Xbox has not announced the final design, price, release date, or box contents for its next-generation console. But with hardware prices rising and Microsoft exploring new ways to make Xbox more affordable, the idea of a controller free bundle is not impossible.
If true, it would be one of the biggest changes to how Xbox sells hardware. It could help lower the entry price for existing players, but it could also backfire badly if fans feel Microsoft is stripping value out of the box.
