Innovation in game development doesn’t always come in the form of bigger worlds or more powerful hardware. Sometimes it comes from solving long-standing technical challenges that players rarely see but benefit from every time they pick up a controller.
That’s exactly what 4J Studios is aiming to achieve with the latest update for Reforj, introducing a brand-new graphics technology called Rixels.
Developed by the Scottish studio best known for bringing Minecraft Console Editions to players around the world, Rixels represents years of research and development inside 4J’s proprietary Elements Engine. Rather than simply improving visual quality, the technology has been designed to rethink how game textures are created, stored and displayed.
According to 4J Studios, the new system can reduce texture storage requirements by more than 98%, allowing artists to build detailed environments while dramatically lowering memory usage. The result is a distinctive visual style that remains sharp even when viewed up close, without the blurring often associated with traditional textures.

The technology makes its public debut in Reforj, players in the Xbox Insider Programme can experience the technology through the latest Rixel Update.
While the technical achievements are impressive, the update also reflects the close collaboration between the development team and the game’s community. According to 4J Studios, the visual style has evolved through collaboration between the development team and the Reforj community as the project has continued to grow, helping refine the game’s unique identity as development continues.
Reforj itself continues to evolve as an ambitious sandbox adventure, with recent additions including Circuits, Maglevs and the continued expansion of its creative building systems. Combined with the introduction of Rixels, the project demonstrates that 4J Studios is investing not only in new gameplay ideas but also in the technology powering them.
For players, that means a world that looks cleaner, performs more efficiently and provides a distinctive visual identity unlike many other sandbox experiences currently in development.
As Reforj moves closer to release, the introduction of Rixels marks another important milestone for Reforj as 4J Studios continues to expand both the game itself and the technology behind it. We’ll be following its progress closely.”how Rixels evolves and whether the technology could eventually influence future projects beyond the game itself.
WildStarGaming also had the opportunity to see Reforj in person during Develop:Brighton, where we spent some hands-on time with the game and met members of the 4J Studios team. Seeing the latest Rixels technology now take another step forward gives us an even greater appreciation for the work going into the project, and we’re excited to follow its development in the months ahead.
What do you think of Reforj’s new Rixels technology?
