Introduction
Winds of Arcana: Ruination is a 2D action-platformer that mixes fast movement, combat and environmental puzzles. It’s clearly inspired by modern metroidvanias and cinematic platformers, aiming to deliver fluid traversal alongside challenging combat.
Unfortunately, after spending time with the game, I came away disappointed. While there’s potential in its ideas, it never managed to pull me in.
Gameplay & Mechanics
The biggest issue for me was how familiar everything felt.
From the movement to the platforming, Winds of Arcana immediately reminded me of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Taking inspiration from great games isn’t a problem, but successful games build on those ideas and create their own identity.
Here, it often felt like I was playing a stripped-back version of something I’d already experienced elsewhere.
The controls never felt as responsive as I wanted, and the combat lacked the satisfying impact needed to keep encounters engaging. Platforming sections also failed to provide the same precision or excitement as the games it appears to draw inspiration from.
Story & World
The game’s world has some interesting ideas, but I never found myself invested in what was happening.
The opening didn’t provide enough of a hook to make me want to keep pushing forward, and I struggled to connect with the setting or characters during my time with the game.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the story doesn’t improve later on, but based on my experience, it failed to make a strong first impression.
Visuals & Audio
Visually, Winds of Arcana has a respectable art style, but it doesn’t do enough to stand out in a genre that’s packed with beautifully crafted indie platformers.
The environments and animations are functional, but they lack the level of polish that helps elevate similar games.
The audio does its job without being particularly memorable.
What We Liked
- Some interesting ideas beneath the surface.
- Decent visual presentation.
- Fans of platformers may still find something to enjoy.
What Could Be Better
- Feels heavily inspired by Prince of Persia without offering enough originality.
- Combat lacks impact.
- Movement doesn’t feel as fluid as it should.
- The opening hours struggle to grab your attention.
- Doesn’t establish a unique identity.
Final Verdict
WildStarGaming Score: ⭐☆☆☆☆ Below 60%
After my time with Winds of Arcana: Ruination, I was left wanting more.
The game isn’t terrible, but it never gave me a compelling reason to keep playing. In a genre filled with excellent platformers and metroidvanias, it simply doesn’t do enough to stand apart from the competition.
If you’re a huge fan of the genre, you may still find some enjoyment here, but for most players I’d recommend looking elsewhere first.
