Xbox brings digital access to physical game collections.

Xbox’s disc-to-digital feature gives supported physical games added flexibility, allowing players to claim digital access while keeping their discs usable.

Microsoft says players can insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc into a compatible console and launch the game to claim a digital entitlement. Supported titles can also benefit from Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, opening up more ways to play across compatible devices. These benefits depend on the individual game.

Following it’s initial Xbox Insider testing, the feature reportedly began rolling out more widely on 29 September, according to MeriStation.

There are conditions to keep in mind. Not every game qualifies, and the promotional material specifies one revocable digital licence per disc. Players should therefore avoid treating this as an unrestricted extra copy they can keep regardless of what happens to the original disc.

Microsoft describes the initiative as part of its wider game preservation efforts, with additional titles planned over time.

For anyone with a shelf full of Xbox games, this could make that collection more convenient to use. Its long-term value will depend on the games supported and how clearly Xbox explains the licensing rules.
